Lived: 234 Henderson Valley Road Moved: 31 Palomino Dr

Grandma came in October 1958 to live in Valley Rd then moved up to Palomino in July 1988 Reasons Grandma and the family moved from Whangarei into the house in Valley Rd because the house they lived in before was to big for them so they wanted a smaller home. Moving to Palomino was because it was an attractive piece of land with two comfortable houses built on it also she thought that the district was relatively crime free and very quiet. Changes My Grandma remembers that in the 60’s a bigger block of shops was built around an already existing grocery center including a wine cellar. Soon after in 1965 the Pony club from Forest Hill Rd got moved to Valley Rd. 1970 was the year that the manager of the shops added a surgurey unit and chemist. In 1988 Palomino was a blind street and only went up to Tirohunga Rd, fortunately in the 90’s the bridge connecting Palomino and Border Rd over the Opanuku Stream was built. Burgundy Park, Bramar and Palm Heights have been completely developed.

Note

Although she would be the last to talk about it Pat suffered in the polio epidemic of the thirties and from her early teens walked with crutches and callipers. Later in life she bought a series of mobility scooters and wheelchairs to get around. Its an inspiring story as she married had four children, brought them up and now in her eighties organised a social world of able-bodied friends as well as being the hub of her family, children, grandchildren and the odd great grand child
