Note

Aunt Betty was born in 1898. Listening to her stories about how she was raised - reveal a very restrictive culture in England... Children were meant to be used, if necessary. In her household, there were servants... (Aunt Betty never did learn to cook very well, bless her heart) There had been five children. Four girls and one boy. The girls were taught to run a household, for the most part, with advanced schooling considered to be unnecessary. (Senior Matriculation was only achieved by Aunt Betty) But for the son - Life was Wonderful. He was given a post-secondary education, and doted upon. Just before Aunt Betty left for Canada, she overheard her Father saying to his cronies that he'd 'never have to hire help to operate his household when his wife died. That's what his daughters were for.' Aunt Betty was the eldest, and knew exactly what he had in mind for her future. I rather suspect that is why she decided to fly the coop and make her own way in another country. Oddly enough, her three sisters all became Nuns. (Oy vey!) The brother was an engineer, of course... Her father had many languages, and insisted that each child learn another language. (He taught them, of course) At the dinner table, he would speak to each child in their given second language... Each child in turn, was expected to use his/her language to communicate with their siblings - which meant that they all learned 5 languages. Her mother appeared to be a fragile, gentle person who only spoke English. She would plead with her husband 'not to worry the children so'...but her words carried no weight, of course. Even into her 90's, when Aunt Betty was suffering with Alzheimer's, she was still afraid of this father of hers...
